Good Time to Lime

For those of us here in New England our soils are, for the most part, acidic (pH below 7.0). The use of lime is very important for

any soil building project around your home or farm.  The benefits of liming include raising pH and neutralizing soil acidity, supplying

calcium and magnesium (dolomite lime), increasing the availability of fertilizers and reducing harmful levels of iron, soluble aluminum

and manganese in the soil.  Lime also speeds up the decomposition of organic matter in your garden or compost pile.

Liming can be done at any time during the year and as a general rule of thumb for maintaining a neutral soil pH (acidity level of 7.0)

is to apply 50 pounds of lime per 1000 square feet per year.
