Good Time to Lime

For those of us here in New England our soils are, for the most part, acidic (pH below 7.0). The use of lime is very important for any soil building project around your home or farm.  The benfeits of liming include raising pH and neutralizing soil acidity, supplying calcium and magnesium (dolomite lime), increasing the availability of fertilizers and reducing harmful levels of iron, soluable aluminum and manganese in the soil.  Lime also speeds up the decomposition of organic matter in your garden or compost pile.
Liming can be done at any time during the year and as a general rule of thumb for maintaining a neutral soil pH (acidity level of 7.0) is to apply 50 pounds of lime per 1000 square feet per year

Spring is a good time to start
protecting your Fruit Trees

Early Spring is the time for applying DORMANT spray oil like "Oil and Lime Sulfur" Spray on your fruit and shade trees.  Spray Oil smothers insects such as aphids, mites and scale that over winter in the bark of the tree.  Spray Oil can be used while the tree is dormant, in green tip or during growing season.  Oil and Lime Sulfur Spray has the advantage of helping control over wintering plant diseases but must be used ONLY while the tree is completely dormant, otherwise it can result in injury to new growth including leaf drop.
For an "All Season" spray, there is Bonide Fruit Tree Spray. You can apply this spray to your fruit trees when insects are present or as a preventative for disease and scale damage.
As with any chemical control you always want to use the manufacturers' instructions for application rates for particular varieties of trees and shrubs and follow all listed safety precautions.
